In my own experience I have found that letting people down has ultimately been benficial to the self enhancement process, so long as they let you know, or you just know yourself.

my current DA account i feel, and my poster around college I feel will ultimately lead to great self improvement because of how pissed off I am with how rushed and messy the content is, It shall lead me to try and prove myself better when I finally have the time to!

but I suppose it is the active hope of avoiding such let downs that causes the benificial effects, and this reasoning thus renders this philosophical arguement redundent. I would therefore delete it if only I didnt feel some need to be perceived by the external world...
a very great need.
which is probably what drives so many of us to produce works of art in the first place.

I would agree with the person who told you if you could read one book... it should be Cosmic Trigger. Its about constantly questioning beliefs, mostly (and lets be honest, even the most open minded amongst us usually fails to question everything they believe). A life changing book if given the opportunity.
